Lady Reiver Women's Basketball Players Sign for 2009-2010 Season.

Western Community College Women’s Basketball announces the signing of two noted players to Division II 4 year programs. Sophomore Negesti Taylor (Harrisburg, PA) and Alicia Bender (Omaha, NE) signed their national letters of intents on April 16, 2009.

Negesti Taylor, a John Harris High School graduate has inked with Emporia State University of Emporia, Kansas. The Hornets of Emporia State is a Division II NCAA school and a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The 6’2 starting center averaged 10.2 points per game and ripped down 9.1 rebounds per game as a Lady Reiver. Taylor broke the individual single season record for most rebounds with 282 rebounds. She also broke the record for the highest rebounding average in a single season with 9.1 rebounds per game. During Taylor’s two years at Iowa Western she totaled 498 rebounds, breaking the record for most rebounds in career. She concluded her sophomore season by being selected All-Region 2nd Team for Region XI. “It will be very difficult to replace Negesti. She is a very talented young lady and proved her self as one of the best rebounders in the country.” Head Coach Jim Turgeon stated.

 

Alicia Bender from Omaha Central High School has signed with Peru State College in Peru, NE. The Bobcats of Peru State is a Division II NAIA school and a member of the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference. The 5’10 forward was a spark plug off the bench for the Lady Reivers. Bender averaged 7.5 points per game and averaged 3.5 rebounds per game. “Alicia suffered some ankle injuries this season that held her back. But she would always play 110% when she stepped on the floor. She will be greatly missed next seaon.” Coach Turgeon commented.

 

The Iowa Western Lady Reivers finished the 2008-2009 season at 18-13 overall. Head Coach Jim Turgeon (2nd year) of the Lady Reivers is excited for both of these young ladies. “I think both schools have excellent basketball programs and a great coaching staff. I am proud of what these ladies have done here for the women’s basketball program. I am confident that they will make the same impact at their new schools next season.”
