Women’s Basketball signs presidential scholarship winner for 2009-2010 season.

Iowa Western head women’s basketball coach Jim Turgeon announces the signing of Marla Metzger from Elgin, Iowa. The 5’6 shooting guard graduated from Valley Community School as a high school student-athlete standout. Metzger graduated with high honors and a cumulative GPA of 3.7. She also was a national honor society member since her junior year. Metzger was recently awarded the Presidential Scholarship, the most prestigious scholarship awarded by Iowa Western Community College. This scholarship is a full two-year conditional award valued at $6000. Selections were based on academic excellence, extracurricular achievements and leadership. As one of the final candidates, Marla was required to interview with IWCC’s President Dr. Kinney and other members of the Presidential Scholars Board. Marla will be required to maintain a 3.5 GPA while at Iowa Western as well as assist the President of Iowa Western in hosting alumni functions, fund raising and other College events.

 

Metzger had an outstanding basketball career at Valley Community School playing all four years on varsity and team captain for three. She was awarded 2nd team all-conference her freshman year and selected 1st team all-conference her sophomore and junior year. Metzger received all-district honors her junior and senior years. She also was named 1st team all-conference and 2nd team all-state her senior year. Metzger reached a milestone on January 9th her senior year, scoring her 1,000th point on her 18th birthday.

"Marla is very intelligent player. She really runs the floor well and will fit perfectly into our up-tempo style of play next year. Signing a player like Marla really shows that as a program we are turning the corner by attracting quality basketball players and high character student-athletes.” Commented Head Coach Jim Turgeon.
