Before her time in Kansas, Sumayyah was a standout on the hardwood at Percy Julian High School (Chicago, Illinois). She was a varsity starter all four years and team captain her senior season. Sumayyah averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds per game. She was selected as an All-City and All-Region player in 2008.

The 5'10" guard was team captain and starter for the Langham Creek Lobo's. She averaged 14 points per game and 9 rebounds per game. Wood guided the Lobos to an outstanding overall record of 21-9 as a senior.
"We are extremely pleased that Sumayyah and Val have chosen to join the Lady Reivers," Turgeon said. "I know with their playing experiences as freshmen will help them have an impact on our program from the start."
